. . . from my files. They appear as thumbnails but are blank. Also, the program keeps crashing.

Could you please try force quitting the app and opening it again. Here are instruction on how to do that: https://www.imore.com/how-force-quit-apps-iphone-ipad
Sometimes, a glitch occurs with downloading from iCloud. But it is usually solved with a force quit. Please let me know if that solves the problem.
